Adega do Fogo is a boutique luxury hotel, located on the Pico Island, one of nine volcanic islands of the Azores, of the coast of Portugal.
Opened in 2021, Adega do Fogo is situated inside a 200 old Cabrito distillery and its manor house, features six boutique rooms, and can be booked entirely for groups up to twelve guests.
Pico Island produces one of Europe's finest wines, and its vineyards have enjoyed being among the official UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. The island has produced wine since the 15th century, but don't expect neat rows of vines. With soil that is deemed unsuitable for the survival of a vineyard, this region has beaten the odds as the vintners adapted to a landscape of volcanic soil littered with lumps of black basalt, which is used to create dry stone-walled plots called 'currais'. A vast grid of currais covers more than 2,000 acres of land on Pico's western coast. Nine white varieties and eight red varieties - ranging from, Arinto, Merlot, Syrah and Tinta Roriz is grown on the island. The region is most commonly known the fortified wines made from Verdelho.
The distillery on the hotel property is still active, and produces brandy, which is added to the wine during the fermentation process to raise the alcohol level and preserve the wine.
You can enjoy breath-taking ocean views from the hotel's terrace, or dive in the heated salt water infinity-edge pool with the views of the Mounty Pico.
The hotel is only 10 miles away from the Mount Pico trails. Mount Pico, a stratovolcano rising almost 8,000 feet above sea level, is the highest peak in Portugal, and has been dormant since 1720s. All hikers need to check-in to 'Casa da Montanha' - Mountain House to start their 3,600+ feet hike up, which takes about 7-8 hours to complete.
While Island of Pico offers many amenities, the other Azores islands have no shortage of attractions. Nature lovers will enjoy bird and whale watching tours. The Poça da Dona Beija hot springs on the island of San Miguel, Algor do Carvão caves and the Gorreana Tea Plantation, the oldest (and now only) tea plantation in Europe, must be on your list of places to check out in Azores.
